Lana and Lex’s romance gave Kristin Kreuk and Michael Rosenbaum the opportunity to share many scenes in season six. “I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Kristin really enjoyed it,” Michael Rosenbaum laughs. “She did. She came up to me one day and said, ‘I really like working with you,’ and it meant a lot. We hadn’t worked together a great deal during the first few seasons. I’m a bit of a goof, and she’s very calm, so we’re two different people. It took until season five or six for us to really start to appreciate each other, and it helped that we finally got the chance to really work together, because we hadn’t done that before.”

Rosenbaum enjoys Kreuk’s company, and found her presence on set really helped his performance. “I really like her, I think she’s a really nice woman,” he says. “She has some great moments. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody give me off camera what she gave me. When she was off camera, in a scene where I was supposed to be upset, she’d cry. I was blown away. She’d really be crying. I’d look at her, and say, ‘I love you. You’re so cool. Thank you for doing that.’ She made me a better actor, there’s no doubt about it. She was very supportive, and she brought out a lot of great things in me, and I hope I did that for her as well. I really appreciate her, and I think she’s great.”

(x) Do you have a favorite episode that sticks out in your mind?
Kristin Kreuk: I really loved, last year, Michael [Rosenbaum, Lex Luthor] had two episodes… one of them was “Shattered”. I thought that was an excellent episode. He did a wonderful job.

(x) Looking back over the past four seasons of Smallville, is there a favorite episode that stands out in your mind?
KK: It’s hard to answer that after almost four years. I like a lot of the Lex-centric episodes. I think Michael did a great job with “Shattered” the year before last. It was great for the show, for his character, and I’d definitely have to rank that among my favorites.

Music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed was pleased with the choice of music to underline the moment between Lana and Lex. “The scene was kind of standing on the edge of the cliff with both the music and the acting, but they don’t actually take the leap. The song [‘Infatuation’ by The Rapture] was very moody, and supported the mystery of ‘Are we ever going to figure out what these two people think of each other?’”

[Michael] Rosenbaum wouldn’t say what’s in store for his character this season, but he did mention something he would like to see. “I hope they let Lex make out with Lana,” Rosenbaum joked. “I doubt that’s going to happen, but you never know. Because you know what? I think Lex is a good kisser, and I think Lana needs to learn.

[Michael Rosenbaum] leans forward. “Here’s what I like about Kristin. As far on the opposite side of her as I am in terms of personality, she respects that. Because she knows that’s who I am. And that’s important.” He chews his steak, waggles his fork in the air and says, “You know, most girls Kristin’s age don’t like bald guys. But I’d be interested to know who she would rather go out with, Clark Kent or Lex Luthor. She’ll probably say Clark. But ask her. I want to know. But don’t say that I want to know.” He thinks about this…

But, [Kristin Kreuk] says, if she had to pick one character from the show to go out with, it’d probably be Lex Luthor: “Lex is really sexy. He’s got all that depth and darkness.” She pauses; somewhere, Michael Rosenbaum must be smiling. But Kreuk herself is frowning. “You really don’t want to date anyone you’re working with,” she says a little later. “That would just be weird. And awkward. And not good. Anyway, I can’t think of anyone that I’d really end up with.”
